"The Hanover Dragoons|
Camp #827, SCV"
January Camp Meeting
The Hanover Dragoons Camp #827, S.C.V. held it's |
first meeting of 2004 on Wednesday, January 21st
at historic Slash Christian Church
located on Mt. Hermon Road, Ashland, VA
We had a great turnout! Our regular Camp Compatriots came out in force as well as two new members, James Dobbins and Tom Kirby. Tom's daughter, Sarah Rae visited with us as well. Commander Harry Boyd, of the Gen. James Longstreet Camp also visited with us and brought our Camp a most generous gift from the Longstreet Camp members. What a grand way to start off the new year!
Our special guest was Past Virginia Division Commander, Henry Kidd, whose program was his discussion about the Crater, Petersburg, VA.
During the month of December, our Camp participated in the Mechanicsville Christmas Parade and was one of the few featured/mentioned with a photo in the Mechanicsville Local newspaper. Our sincerest thanks to Cmdr. Bob Moates of the Charlotte Courthouse Grays for appearing as our beloved General Robert E. Lee on our Camp's float. We certainly received many salutes, waves and cheers as we walked through the town. (See photo below)
It is with great sadness that we report the passing of a fellow SCV Compatriot who had done some wonderful work for our Camp. Compatriot Mike Smith, of the Cold Harbor Guards Camp, passed away suddenly December 30th. Mike visited with our Camp in the fall to tell us about the upcoming Dixie Days event and had been doing many of our Camp t-shirts and hats. He was a fine gentleman and was well liked by many. Our Camp Commander and Color Sgt. attended the funeral services, which were in keeping with Mike's great pride and love for his heritage. Please keep Mike's family, friends and Camp Compatriots in your thoughts and prayers.
Robert T. Millikin, III, Site Owner/Admin. and Commander, The Hanover Dragoons Camp #827.
